The date on the stone in the engraving on the right side, “1388”, commemorates the Battle of Naefels which was fought on 9 April 1388 between Glarus with their allies, the old Swiss confederation and the Habsburgs. Despite being outnumbered about 10 to 1, the Glarus forces were victorious. This was near the end of the long 14th century war between the Swiss and the Austrians. In 1389 a peace was signed in Vienna leaving the Swiss Confederation in possession of all the territory they had acquired during the war. The very next year there was a pilgrimage to the site of the battle which still takes place today on the first Thursday in April. CONDITION: Extremely fine plus. Overall retains about all of its orig factory finish with strong bright blue on the bbl and bright case colors on receiver, lever and bottom tang with the buttplate having slightly darkened case colors on the face, brilliant on the bottom tang.
