ASSEMBLED SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR RIFLE WITH METCALF DEVICE AND SLING. SN 68122. Cal. 45/70. 32-5/8” rnd bbl. Standard Springfield markings for this period, including the “ESA” cartouche on left side of stock. The Metcalf bar is installed on stock between lockplate and rear bbl band. Wood block holds 8 cartridges. Lid is marked “8. RIFLE CARTRIDGES CAL45” in raised letters. Reverse side, which has mounting lugs, is marked on paper seal “8 RIFLE – BALL / Calibre .45. 70Grains Musket Powder. / Put up at Springfield Armory, Feby.1876”. The opposite side is marked “CARTRIDGES. / Bullet, .405 Grains. / Made at Frankford Arsenal January,1876.”. Tear string is still in place. CONDITION: Fine. Half the remaining blue mixed with surface rust and light pitting on bbl and buttplate. 75% casehardening colors on breechblock, bright on left side. Stock has numerous dents and gouges, which have been varnished over. Mechanically fine. Bore is good. Chips to the varnish coating on the tear string end of the cartridge box. Lower half of seal has been torn, and there are chips on edge of upper seal but has not been opened. 4-58350 FS159 (3,000-4,000)
