TWO CONTINENTAL NEEDLEWORKS. Late 18th-early 19th century. The first, a continental harbor scene with a walled edifice with flag. Figures on the quay and shoreline, sailing ship in mid-ground. Executed in fine pettit point and mounted in a later frame. The second, a French woven silkwork depicting Virgin Mary with blue robe and halo standing in a treed landscape framed within a floral arch. Surrounded by an inscription “Amour et Reconnaissones Amarie Reine des Anges”. SIZE: Petite point 5-1/2″ X 9 1/4″. Weaving 14 1/2″ X 17 1/4″. CONDITION: The petite point faded and soiled in need of cleaning, structurally sound. The silk needlework with areas of loss along bottom edge and foreground, weaknesses throughout, deterioration evident in verse. Stretched on a cardboard backing. 9-91849 (300-500)
