*MANNLICHER SCHOENAUER 1903 FULL STOCK RIFLE, ORIGINALLY SOLD TO WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST. SN 8786. Cal. 6.5 X 54 MS. 23-1/2″ Round barrel with one standing, one folding rear sight, dovetailed through banded block, and silver bead front sight dovetailed through banded matted ramp, is engraved “Von Lengerke & Detmold, Inc. New York” on top. Vienna proofs and SN are stamped on either side at rear. Standard Mannlicher Schoenauer action with five shot rotary magazine is stamped “Oesterr. Waffenfabr. – Ges. Steyr” on left sidewall. Top of receiver is matted and stamped “Patent” “Mannlicher” “M 1903”. Bolt handle is standard Mannlicher butter knife type. A Viennese tong type scope mount is dovetailed through receiver ring, with rear screw stud on left side of bridge. Action has double set triggers. Full length streaked and slightly figured French walnut pistol grip buttstock measures 13-7/8″ over typical Mannlicher ribbed steel trap buttplate. Spaces for cleaning rod, etc. under trap are empty. Stock features nicely shaped cheekpiece for right hand shooter, sling swivels, steel grip and muzzle caps. Checkering is at approx 18 LPI, and has a mix of borderless and double line borders. It is interesting that the muzzle cap rests directly on the barrel and not on the sight base, which is set 7/8″ back from muzzle. Karl Kahles Mignon 4X scope with crosshair reticle is engraved “Von Lengerke & Detmold, Inc. New York” on top rear. Scope is mounted in soldered on Viennese see-through mounts. PROVENANCE: Letters from G & H historian, Robert C. Beach, with particulars of this rifle, and copies of VL & D ledgers where this rifle is listed. CONDITION: Very fine. Metal retains 90% blue, turning brown with some areas of minor discoloration and pinprick pitting. Stock has most all of an old re-finish. Bore is very good. Rifling is strong. Scope shows some light pinprick pitting, and lacquer on brass parts has mostly worn off. Optics are very good, but need cleaning. Long barreled 6.5’s are scarce. This example is unusual because it is scoped, and has an historic association. 4-39328 MGM26 (4,000-8,000)
