EXTREMELY RARE 30 CALIBER EXPERIMENTAL SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR RIFLE. Cal. 30. SN D. 32-5/8” rnd bbl. Only 15 of these were originally made. Besides the cal., the main differences in these rifles are the stock and breech mechanism. Stock is rounded at tip with no metal or ramrod provisions. There is also a reinforced upper hand guard with two iron straps across top. Buffington type sight is not marked for range. Front sight has blade inserted in attached high block. While the receiver is cut for the positive cam mechanism, it is not mounted on the breechblock. Breechblock has the normal screw under the breechblock to retain the firing pin, rather than the one on the side. There is no camming action to the lock. Two compartments under rotating trapdoor on buttplate are short. Top of breechblock is unmarked. Some unidentified markings on top of bbl to rear of rear sight. CONDITION: About 30% of blue remains, mixed with light surface rust and pitting. Breechblock shows some heat color but no finish. Stock is very good, with light to normal handling marks. Mechanically, the breechblock does not quite fit. Edwards Collection 4-58496 FS137 (10,000-20,000)
