SARAH WICHES LIPPETT (American, 1789-1847) JOHN THE BAPTIST. Oil on wood panel, after a painting by Leonardo Da Vinci (Italian, 1452-1519), shows a half portrait of John the Baptist with finger pointed up and the other hand holding a small cross. Housed in its original gilt molded wood antique frame. The back of the panel stenciled “BOSTON ATHENAEUM 41”. Also having a label marked “No. 27 John the Baptist from Da Vinci by Miss S.W. Lippett”. REFERENCE: Page 93 of The Boston Anthenaeum Art Exhibition Index by Perkins & Gavin, lists in 1834 this painting. Also indicates that it was exhibited at 7 other times, the last being 1855. SIZE: 24″ x 17-1/2″. PROVENANCE: From a large Boston, MA area Estate. CONDITION: Surface dirt, discolored varnish layer. In need of cleaning and restoration. 9-99321 (600-900)
