Additional Information: We have been contacted by a collector of Carlsen’s work and advised that this exact work was sold by Sotheby Parke Bernet, New York, NY in January 26-27, 1984 (lot #561) American Art Archive #63003265. Possibly c. 1884. Possibly North Carolina.

EMILE S. CARLSEN (American 1848-1932) A DRINK BY THE ROAD. Oil on canvas Summer scene shows a road lined with trees and water. A cow has stopped to drink and two other cows are grazing on the side. All under an expanse of blue sky with white clouds which reflect in the foreground water. Signed lower left. Housed in good gilt molded wood frame with linen liner. SIZE: 15″ x 19-1/2″. CONDITION: Minor touch-up, very good. 9-25498 (2,000-3,000)
