SPRINGFIELD SECOND ALLEN CONVERSION RIFLE. Cal. 50/70. NSN. 32-5/8” rnd bbl. Standard Springfield beveled lockplate dated 1864. Breechblock is marked “1869 / eagle head”. There is an unreadable cartouche on left side of stock, which has also been stamped with the number “16”. This is considered by some to be a legitimate arsenal variation, but it originally had a longer bbl and stock. The orig middle bbl band and spring have been removed, the slot for the spring filled, and the contour of the stock changed in that area. This was probably done by Schuyler, Hartley, and Graham. CONDITION: Smooth gray patina mixed with light surface rust and signs of cleaning with darker patina on breech assembly and lock. Stock has been lightly cleaned with minor dents and scratches. Forearm has been refinished. Mechanically fine. Bore is dark. Edwards Collection 4-58453 (1,000-2,000)
