MANNER OF CLAUDE-JOSEPH VERNET (French, 1714-1789) HARBOR VIEW WITH PALACE AND FIGURES. Large oil on canvas mounted to masonite panoramic harbor scene with several large galleons and smaller boats in a light wave sea. A tall tower is at the entrance to the harbor along with a low tower adjacent. The foreground shows the shoreline with 30 figures, some fishing, a musician, merchants and people. Two large multi-story buildings, one with a clock tower are seen on the right side of the harbor. The sun is rising low on the horizon casting a yellow light on the blue and white cloud sky. Housed in a gesso decorated 19th Century frame with gold liner. SIZE: 40-1/2″ x 53-1/2″. PROVENANCE: From a large Boston, MA area Estate. CONDITION: Large chips at edges, craquelure, surface dirt, some inpainting and restoration. Generally good. 9-99287 (3,000-5,000)
