PAUL WEBER (AMERICAN, 1823 – 1916) THE RIVER CROSSING. Oil on canvas landscape scene shows a red-shirted man on horseback at edge of river with cows crossing. Tree and grass-lined banks leading to distant hills under white cloud and blue sky Signed “PAUL WEBER” and dated “1864”. Housed in its outstanding original gesso-decorated deep antique gilt frame with gilt bead decorated liner. The frame carrying a “FOSTER BROTHERS” framing label on reverse. Also a partial “BOSTON ATHENAEUM” label with name “SKINNER” in pen. According to the book, “Art Exhibition Index of the Boston Athenaeum from 1827-1874″, by Perkins & Gavin. On page 149, in 1871-72, there was a landscape painting owned by Mrs. F. Skinner by Paul Weber. We believe this to be the painting. SIZE: 12-1/2″ X 19-1/2”.
