SPRINGFIELD MODEL 1875 OFFICER’S MODEL TRAPDOOR RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. NSN. Fine officer’s rifle with 26” tapered rnd bbl, Beach’s combination front sight with pin on top of the loop. It has a ski jump rifle ladder rear sight graduated to 500 yards on left side and 1,200 yards on ladder. It has “VP” & eagle proofs with another “P” near receiver ring. Low arch breechblock has small lettered “U.S. / MODEL / 1873” and lockplate is only marked with an eagle & “US / SPRINGFIELD”. Bottom of bbl has a sgl iron guide for orig brass tipped hickory rod. Mounted with 1-pc straight grain walnut stock with fancy silver-plated, pewter tip & sgl band with coarse checkered forestock & checkered straight grip with attached checkered pistol grip & rifle/carbine buttplate without trap that has “US” on tang. Top of wrist is mounted with an orig oval base, tang sight with 3-1/2” staff. Lockplate, breechblock, thumb lever, receiver ring, trigger guard, nosecap & buttplate tang are beautifully engraved in foliate arabesque patterns. Only 477 of these beautiful rifles were made in period 1875 through 1885. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl retains about 90% strong orig blue. Breechblock, receiver, lockplate & hammer retain faint traces of case colors, being mostly a smooth, dark, silver/gray patina. Engraving is still sharp & clear. Trigger guard retains about 50% silvered case colors & buttplate 30-40% silvered case colors with pitting on heel. Pewter nosecap retains 65-70% orig milky nickel. Wood is sound with a couple of bruises in forearm checkering and another on wrist with light handling & use marks thereafter. There are a couple of small chips around rear lockplate screw and a stain on left side of comb. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore with a spot or two of light orange peel effect. 4-60284 JR535 (20,000-30,000)
