*EARLY CASED WINCHESTER MODEL 21 GRAND AMERICAN DBL BBL SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 ga. SN 8071. Fine early ’21’ with 30″ bbls choked FULL/MOD with ventilated rib, dbl ivory beads, ejectors & gold plated sgl selective trigger. It has flat side receiver with typical Grand American patterns consisting of vignettes of a setter & partridge on left side, a pointer & quail on right side, two pheasants on trigger plate & a spaniel’s head on trigger bow, all the animals in gold. All surrounded by very well executed fine patterns of foliate arabesque engraving. Engraving extends 3-3/8″ up bbls with a fine gold line at each muzzle. Fences have deep relief engraved oak leaf & acorn patterns. Top tang has the serial number & “S” in gold and it has gold “L” and “R” with gold arrows on each side of trigger. Mounted with beautiful highly figured flame grain American walnut with beavertail forearm & Monte Carlo pistol grip stock, 14″ over an early solid Winchester pad. Accompanied by copies of two final inspection reports, the first dated 1932 and the second, 1939, with a variety of other dates up through 1952. Also accompanied by a canvas & leather felt lined trunk case. Also accompanied by a lengthy Cody Firearms Museum letter identifying this shotgun with a great variety of changes to wood. It apparently began life in 1932 with a 14-1/2″ LOP with 2-1/2″ drop at heel & 1-1/2″ drop at comb. There are a number of other dates through 1950 where a variety of changes were made in dimensions. Letter states that bbl length was 32″. It is believed that this is a mistake in records. It is unclear but there appears to have been a variety of alterations to the stock with the final appearing to be 14″ LOP, 1-3/8″ drop at heel & 1-3/8″ at comb. Drop at heel: 1-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-1/2″. Bore restrictions: left – .021, right – .034. Wall thickness: left – .028, right – .024. Bore diameter: left – .714, right – .701. Weight: 7 lbs. 13.44 oz. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Retains virtually all of a fine professionally restored finish, probably factory, to both metal & wood. Bbls & receiver retain virtually all of this fine finish, while the tail of the trigger guard & tip of the top tang are slightly worn. Wood is sound with a minor nick or two. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bores. Case with some light soil is otherwise nearly new. 4-55529 JR121 (10,000-15,000)
