*FINE SPECIAL ORDER MERKEL DOUBLE RIFLE. Cal. 470 Nitro Express. SN A470296. Spectacular sidelock dbl rifle with 23-1/2” octagon bbls, ramp front sight with gold bead and 2-leaf express sight mounted on a quarter rib with Greener crossbolt extension, dbl underbites, extractor & dbl triggers. Rib is engraved “Safari .470 N.E.”. Left top flat is marked with importer’s name & side flat with maker’s name & address. Mounted with extremely beautiful, exhibition quality, streaky, honey & chocolate, circassian walnut with checkered, splinter forearm & pistol grip stock with deep scallop cheekpiece, 14-1/4” over a Merkel black composition buttplate. Stock is weighted with a commercial device in two holes under buttplate. Bbls have a safari sling loop on bottom with a corresponding loop on buttstock. Sidelock receiver is coin finished with Greener crossbolt, side clips & reinforcements with cocked indicators on lockplates and beautifully engraved with a large bull elephant in a veld scene and a maned lion on right side, also in a veld scene, surrounded by about 60% coverage foliate arabesque patterns with shaded background. Lockplates & bottom of receiver have beautiful gold wire inlay. Left lockplate is signed “BH”, probably Burkhald Hafner. Accompanied by its orig green cardboard box numbered to this rifle. Drop at heel: 2-1/2”, drop at comb: 1-5/16”. Weight: 10 lbs. 5.44 oz CONDITION: New & unfired. Retains all of its orig finish to both metal & wood with an exceptional hand rubbed finish on wood.
