ALBERT BIERSTADT (American, 1830-1902) PANORAMIC VIEW OF CASTLE AND VALLEY. Large oil on canvas scene shows a Continental scene with a large castle atop cliff. The castle overlooks a river valley with snow capped mountains in the distance. The foreground shows three women with gathering baskets walking along dirt paths and crossing a wood bridge over a small mountain stream. An Alpine house is seen on the left side. All under light blue and white cloud sky. Signed lower right with conjoined AB and dated “1868”. Attached to top left corner is an original label which appears to have a location “Schloss Tirol”. According to Matthew Baigell’s book on Albert Bierstadt is was in 1867 that Bierstadt traveled to England and then toured the continent and returns in 1869. SIZE: 24-3/4″ x 35″. CONDITION: Three tears with a small missing section. Painting appears to be untouched under blacklight but in need of cleaning and restoration. 9-92078 (15,000-25,000)
