VICTOR GABRIEL GILBERT (French, 1847-1933) PARISIAN STREET SCENE WITH FLOWER VENDOR. Oil on board Housed in contemporary frame Signed “Victor Gilbert”, lower left Period inventory label affixed to reverse Victor Gilbert was born in Paris in 1847. While the artist was primarily self-taught, and only later in life received formal training, in both form and subject Gilbert speaks to the height of the Belle Epoque style. Widely collected during his life, Gilbert was known for his atmospheric Parisian scenes populated with haggling fruit vendors, demure flower sellers and elegant Parisians beautifully turned out in the most current fashion of the day. As seen in the above painting, Gilbert’s scenes are at one time gossamer plein air compositions very purposefully grounded in exacting detail. SIZE: 15″ x 18″. Overall: 17-1/2″ x 20-3/4″. CONDITION: Very good. 9-27722 (8,000-12,000)
