*L.C. SMITH GRADE 2 DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN & A LARGE LOT OF PHOTOGRAPHS RELATING TO THE EARLY DAYS OF CODY, WYOMING. Cal. 12 ga. SN 44360. Fine Grade 2 shotgun with 28” steel bbls choked IMP-CYL/IMP-CYL with tapered, concave, matted rib, dbl ivory beads, crossbolt rib extension, extractor and dbl triggers. Mounted with very nicely figured, slab sawed, checkered, American walnut with replacement beavertail forearm and orig semi-pistol grip stock, 14-1/4” over a White Line waffle pad. Lockplates are very beautifully engraved with the small vignettes of a quail on left side and a woodcock on right side with light, fine foliate arabesque patterns. It has maker’s name on each side. Accompanied by two photo albums compiled by a gentleman named Albert Henry Pease, who apparently arrived in Cody about the Fall of 1909 and left about two years later in 1911. He apparently held a variety of jobs in the Cody area including surveyor and reportedly worked for Buffalo Bill as a driver. The photographs, according to family history were all taken with Mr. Pease’s Kodak bellows camera which also accompanies this lot. There are about 100 pages of photographs and various holiday cards from the early part of the 20th century. The photographs are primarily of the Cody area including many people, houses & buildings of the Cody 1909-1911 period, one of which is thought to be that of “Cassie”, Cody’s most famous madame, who ran a house of ill repute in Cody for many years, well into the 20th century. Also accompanying is the aforementioned Kodak camera & its orig carrying case, a fine Marbles woodcraft hunting knife with stag handle & sheath, a very early cartridge/money belt from the early 20th century, a fine pair of French binoculars with their orig case, having Mr. Pease’s name inside flap and an early cow’s horn powder horn with some scratched initials. Bore diameter: left – .729, right – .728. Bore restrictions: left – .005, right – .005. Wall thickness: left – .036, right – .033. Drop at heel: 2-5/8”, drop at comb: 1-3/4”. Weight: 7 lbs. 15.04 oz. CONDITION: Shotgun is good to very good. Bbls retain most of an old re-blue with balance of metal cleaned & worn bright. Stock has a hairline back of right lockplate, otherwise wood is sound & retains most of a restored finish. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bores with fine pitting. The albums are old & brittle showing heavy wear from their century of handling. Knife is fine with replacement sheath. Cartridge belt is dry & worn with broken billet, otherwise is sound. Binoculars are fine, case has some loose stitching. Powder horn is fine. Camera appears to be functional with the case dry & worn with some restored stitching. 4-31030 JR546 (3,000-5,000)
