*RARE SAVAGE MODEL 1899 VICTOR GRADE LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 303 Savage. SN 81094. Beautiful early takedown rifle with 26″ tapered rnd bbl, Sheard front sight, slot blank in the rear seat and a locking Lyman tang sight. The receiver is wonderfully engraved with game scenes of a charging buffalo vignette on the left side and a walking tiger on the right side completely surrounded with very fine foliate arabesque patterns with stippled background. Both sides have full coverage. The bottom of the rifle has a small-engraved panel that bears a name that has been partially obliterated. The sides of the forearm takedown ring are stippled and there are small patterns on the sides of the lever stud. It is fitted with highly figured marble cake French walnut stock & forearm that has “B” carving and checkered side panels with schnable tip forearm and serpentine shaped grip cap 13-1/8″ LOP over crescent steel buttplate. Accompanied by a factory letter from Roe Clark, Savage Historian, fully identifying this rifle and indicating shipment December 21, 1907 to Bances & Mueller Hardware. The letter also indicates that it was returned for service and re-shipped to Stembough Thompson Company and that there is a note “Name in Scroll”. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl, lever, buttplate and wood retain virtually all of an extremely fine professionally restored finish. Receiver does not appear to have been touched and retains about 90% bright orig factory finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-53841 JR69 (3,500-5,000)
