UNUSUAL B. MILLS AND SON (LEXINGTON, KY) DRILLING. SN NSN. (Ca. 1875) Cal. 40 Rifle over Double 12. This unusual American drilling with top mounted rifle bbl has buckhorn rear and silver bead front sights dovetailed through top of bbl. 30-3/4″ Barrels mate to action with rotating front mounted side lever which cams bbls over two raised bosses on breech face, similar to J. D. Dougal’s lock fast action. Bar locks are stamped “B. Mills & Son Lexington, Ky.” and have serpentine hammers. Top rifle bbl is fired by centrally mounted hammer which only cocks when front trigger is set. This design needs a little work, as firing pin is under tension from hammer when cartridge is in top bbl, which is a very unsafe situation. Steel trigger guard ends in looped grip. Figured American walnut buttstock measures 13-1/4″ over steel crescent buttplate with coarse checkering and line border at grip, and on forend, which mounts to bbl with side nail through oval German silver escutcheons. Bore diameter: left -.739, right -000. Bore restrictions: left -.0735, right -000. Wall thickness: left -.034, right -.038. Drop at heel: Approx 2″, drop at comb: Approx 2-5/8″. Weight: 10 lbs. 2 oz, LOP 13-1/4″. PROVENANCE: H.H. Thomas Collection. CONDITION: Fair to good. Bbls retain most of an old re-brown. Action and lockplates retain some case color. Stocks retain most of a varnish finish. Buttstock is probably original, but has been refinished. Forend is a fairly well done replacement. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Locks are crisp. Bores are very good with some light pitting. Rifle bbl is very fine, bright and shiny with strong rifling. 4-36658 MGM69 (2,500-3,500)
