*THE VERY FIRST WINCHESTER MODEL 1894 IN CALIBER 32. Cal. 32 WS. SN 107731. Standard grade rifle with 26″ oct bbl, full magazine, dovetail blade front sight and semi-buckhorn rear sight. It has uncheckered wood with straight grip and crescent steel buttplate. The left side of the receiver has an unusual threaded hole near the upper rear edge and the hammer screw on the left side has a small-machined circle around it. The stock has a small aluminum tag tacked in place on the bottom marked “STD. VEL.” It is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter fully identifying this rifle as having been originally shipped Oct. 16, 1901 with the note “Taken to Mr. Whl. for excessive test.” The letter also states return & repair March 4, 1906 and April 7, 1914. Cody Firearms records disclose that this is the very first Winchester rifle in caliber 32 Winchester Special. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain 96-98% strong bright orig blue, slightly thinned on the bottom of the magazine tube. Receiver retains 95-96% strong bright orig blue with some light flaking and very fine surface rust on the right side. Lever retains about 80% orig case colors, strong on the sides, thinned on the edges. Hammer retains most of its orig dark case colors. Top tang is missing a small plug screw and has a tang sight screw in the rear socket. Wood is sound with usual handling nicks, dings & scratches, a small gouge on the forearm and one of the butt stock. Forearm retains about 80% orig finish and the buttstock about 95% strong orig finish. Mechanics are crisp, bright shiny bore. 4-55301 JR739 (10,000-15,000)
