ENGRAVED SMITH & WESSON NO. 2 ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 32 S&W Long RF. SN 39382. Nickel finish with 6” keyhole bbl, half moon, German silver, front sight with smooth 2-pc rosewood grips that are matching numbered to this revolver. This revolver is engraved by L.D. Nimschke in patterns identical to those found on p. 23 of L.D. Nimschke Firearms Engraver, Wilson. They consist of 50-60% coverage fine intertwined foliate arabesque patterns with punch dot background and a large fouled anchor on sideplate with some cross-hatching on opposite side. Backstrap & buttstrap are engraved also. Cyl has 75-80% coverage matching engraving. Accompanied by a Smith & Wesson factory letter identifying this revolver as having been shipped May 30, 1865 to J.W. Storrs, New York City, NY, Smith & Wesson’s sole agent from 1856-1869. It was in a shipment of 75 mixed revolvers, all with plain finish. This letter also identifies it as Nimschke engraved. CONDITION: Very good, all matching including grips. Retains 30-40% orig finish with balance cleaned to bright metal. Orig finish is possibly silver plating, but being polished bright, appears to be nickel. There is some scattered fine pitting, mostly around forcing cone area with heavier pitting on face of cyl. Hinge pin screw is a replacement and may be stripped. Grips show moderate to heavy wear with a couple of minor chips on edges and retain 30-40% orig varnish. Mechanics are fine, strong dark bore. Baldwin Collection 4-30015 JR108 (3,000-6,000)
