SCARCE SHOULDER STOCK & HOLSTER FOR AUSTRALIAN CONTRACT SMITH & WESSON NEW MODEL NO. 3 REVOLVER. Scarce accessory for the Australian Contract revolvers, of which there were only 250 manufactured for the Australian Colonial Police in 1880. Stock is serial numbered “13218” with standard attaching iron and straight grain, uncheckered walnut with S&W logo hard rubber buttplate. The attaching iron has a threaded recess for tang sight which was never issued with these revolvers, although a number of authentic stocks have been observed with the recesses. Apparently Smith & Wesson used stocks for this contract that had been previously manufactured for the revolving rifle. The holster is made of russet brown leather, 13-1/2” long x 4-1/2” wide x about 1-1/2” thick with a flap top with slot for brass stud. Left edge has a slot for saddle strap and a D-ring in back. Inside top, under the flap, are the Australian markings “37” and a broad arrow. CONDITION: Stock is fine with the attaching iron retaining 60-70% orig nickel with the loss areas dark patina mixed with some fine pitting. There is a small crack in the wood back of top tang, otherwise wood is sound and retains about 75-80% orig varnish. Buttplate is fine. Holster is horse sweat stained with some light soil and fine crackling at the bend in the flap and along edges of body. A fine addition to an Australian Contract revolver. 4-30702 JR423 (1,500-2,500)
