CUSTER ERA 1870’S INDIAN PIPE TOMAHAWK. Well made iron headed tomahawk with 8-1/4″ head having a 1-3/4″ high x 3/4″ pipe bowl on top and a 4-5/8″ long blade that flares from 1-1/8″ out to 3-3/8″. It has the early style heart shaped cut-out with decorative raised file work around the base of the pipe bowl and where the blade joins the socket. The socket hole is 1-3/4″ and elliptical shaped. It has what appears to be the orig haft which is 14-1/4″ long, slightly curved upward, missing the orig wedge, which secured it in the socket. It has several tack holes down the left side and an old brass nail in the right side with a clean out plug at the head end. CONDITION: Head is bright and clean with some light pitting on the pipe bowl and minor hammer marks around the pipe bowl rim. Edge is clean and dull with a few nicks & dings and has light, fine pitting on both sides. Haft has numerous grain checks and shows heavy wear with substantial charred area around the socket. A fine Indian Wars period authentic tomahawk. 4-55308 JR741 (5,000-9,500)
