ENGRAVED SMITH & WESSON FIRST MODEL AMERICAN SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 44 American. SN 4792. Blue finish with 8” keyhole bbl, slightly altered half moon German silver front sight with smooth 2-pc walnut grips numbered to this revolver. It has fine New York style engraving with full coverage on both sides of frame in foliate arabesque patterns with a very fine stippled background. The bbl pivot has flower blossoms. This beautiful deep engraving is on both sides of bbl and ejector housing with matching patterns on backstrap & buttstrap. Both sides of top strap are diamond cross-hatched. Both sides of bbl & cyl have vice marks. Accompanied by a Smith & Wesson Factory letter identifying this revolver as having been shipped Aug. 7, 1871 to M.W. Robinson, New York City, NY with 8” bbl, plain blue finish and smooth walnut grips in a shipment of 100 identical handguns. CONDITION: Very good to fine, all matching including grips. Overall retains 40-50% thin orig blue, stronger in sheltered areas, gray patina elsewhere. Grips are sound and show moderate to heavy wear with a few dings & scratches and possibly an old refinish. Will not hold in safety notch, otherwise mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. Screws are slightly battered and the knurled pawl latch may be an old replacement.
