CHARLES WOODBURY (American, 1864-1940) “MONADNOCK”. Oil on canvas Housed in a fine carved and gilt modern frame Signed lower left “Woodbury 07″ SIZE: 23″ x 27”. Overall: 29-1/4″ x 33-1/4″ PROVENANCE: This first impression of Monadnock, painted in 1907, was retained by the artist until his death in 1940. The painting then found its home with his good friend, patron and collaborator Elizabeth Ward Perkins’ family. Subsequently, it was given to Dr. William Bosworth Castle of Harvard medical school. The painting was then purchased from the estate of Dr. Castle by its present owner. “Monadnock” was exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston in 1945 (labels and copies of forms for the exhibition available to buyer). A larger version of this painting executed in 1912 is part of the permanent collection of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
