ROBERT HENRI (American, 1865-1929) PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG MAN. Oil on canvas shoulder length portrait showing the side view of a brown haired man with light mustache wearing a black coat with inner neck scarf. Brown mottled background. Signed lower left which is dark colored against the black coat which makes the signature not easily visible. Under blacklight it does show. Housed in a gilt replacement carved wood frame. NOTE: Two-page typed letter from Bennard B. Perlman dated May 19th, 2007 regarding this painting indicates that “As a result of extensive research on my part, it is my opinion that the work is, indeed, from the hand of Robert Henri (1865-1929).”. He goes on to mention that he believes it is prior to 1902 and offers the possibility that it could be a portrait created when he taught at the School of Design for Women in Philadelphia or even Paris. The letter will accompany the lot. Mr. Bennard B. Perlman is the author of “Robert Henri: His Life in Art, Dover Publications (June 1991). SIZE: 16″ x 12”. CONDITION: 2″ x 4″ patch to reverse which corresponds to hair above ear, on new stretcher, craquelure, otherwise very good. 9-98930 (15,000-20,000)
