MARTIALLY MARKED COLT ARTILLERY SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN 8256. Usual configuration with 5-1/2” bbl, early script address with dashes at each end and an altered front sight. It has 1-pc walnut grip with initials crudely carved on each side and battered bottom edges. Left side of frame has 2-line patent dates and a small “U.S.”. According to the Table of Shipments of single actions from the Springfield Armory, as listed on p. 234 of Cavalry & Artillery Revolvers – a Continuing Study, Kopec & Fenn, the frame of this revolver was in Lot #8 that went to the 5th, 8th & 9th Cavalry, stationed in San Antonio, Texas and Fort Union, NM. CONDITION: Fair. No orig finish remains, being mostly a dark, heavy brown patina with some refinished blue showing through on sides of frame. Trigger is a nickel plated replacement. Ejector rod housing is a late third type with the ejector rod head broken off. Grips are worn and battered with chipped toes. Base pin is frozen in the cyl and base pin screw is missing. Hand is either broken or missing and bolt is non-functioning. Hammer will not hold at any position. Bore is worn & dark. 4-30531 JR436 (2,000-3,000)
