EMILE ALBERT GRUPPE (American, 1896-1978) “WATER LILLIES”. Exceptional and rare large oil on canvas lily pond scene shows a partial view of a large pond filled with clusters of green lily pads having colorful flowering buds. The background shows the edge of the pond with boulders, trees and bushes including a blue and green bush which resembles Agava. The central background having an opening with light flowing through it onto the pond reflecting a light to medium blue swirling water flanked by the reflections of the darker tree and bush lined bank. A wonderful use of light and dark colors to achieve a realistic but impressionist view of the scene. Signed lower right “Emile A. Gruppe”. Most likely a scene in or around Naples, Florida. Housed in a gilt wood frame with linen liner. Title and artist name written on the top stretcher. To our knowledge, this is one of only three known lily pond works by Gruppe. This work exemplifies his finest efforts and shows how his modern style emulated from Claude Monet’s influence. Through this work, one can see Monet’s influence and Gruppe’s rendition of one of Monet’s water lily paintings. A true masterpiece of Emile Gruppe’s talent. SIZE: 24″ x 36″. CONDITION: Very good to excellent. 9-95746 (30,000-40,000)
