ISAAC EUGENE CRAIG (AMERICAN, 1830 – 1912) “PEACE”. Outstanding large oil on canvas interior scene shows a three-quarter view of a young girl dressed in a white with gold edged dress holding an olive branch. She has long blonde curly hair and she stands in front of an arched top alcove which is painted red and green. Signed bottom left, “I. E. CRAIG”. Housed in a magnificent gesso-decorated gilt frame with artist and title plaque. Note: In the book “Artists of the 19th Century and their Works”, by Clement & Hutton, Vol. 1, 1979, under the artist’s biography it mentions visiting the artist when “he was at work on a sweet picture when I called at his studio, a beautiful girl with a sunny face and golden ringlets holding in her hand an emblem of “peace””. This was from an article in The New York Observer, January 24, 1878. A copy of the entry accompanies the painting. SIZE: 40″ x 28-3/4″.
