CHINESE BLACK LACQUER AND CINNABAR CIRCULAR PENG BOX WITH COVER. 19th century. The lid deeply carved depicting a battle between mounted Samurai framed between pavilions with a mountainous landscape in the background all within a conforming Greek key border. The sides of the box with reserves carved with various scenes of children at play and of learning alternating with ribbon tied scholarly devices. The base similarly carved. SIZE: 6″ h x 12-1/2″ dia. CONDITION: Very good overall with original surfaces and nice patina. Minor losses to black lacquered surfaces along rim of lid and base and with some shrinkage cracking in interior. 9-22317 (6,000-8,000)
