UNIQUE & IMPORTANT NATURAL CRYSTAL CARVING OF TRIBUTE TO EMPRESS DOWAGER CIXI. Circa 1894. This rare example was a birthday gift to the Empress Dowager Cixi in celebration of her 60th birthday (Oct. 10, 1894) by Prince Duan Aixinjueluo Zaiyi (1856-1922), nephew of Emperor Xianfeng (reign 1850-1861). This fanciful clear crystal carving depicting a central bearded Buddha standing with a walking staff in his right hand, a censor at his feet. Above his head is a rendering of a winged dragon beneath flying bats. A figure of a youth holding a fruit is above his right shoulder and an inscribed Fu character is above his left shoulder. To his left a deer, making an offering of a lingzhi or mushroom. On his right, above the stylized tree with jade green leaves, is a heron. The central figure standing on a rocky plinth is partially concealed behind these jade colored leaves, the natural rockwork also of a jade green color. When viewed from the rear the upper half of the carving is rendered with cloud bands centering a SHOU character at the apex, while the base clearly depicts a continuation of the tree branches. The tree roots continuing into the rockwork base. The whole mounted on a stylistic carved hardwood base of later vintage. A truly rare and fine example. SIZE: 20″ h x 13-1/2″ w.
