*RARE, ONE OF A KIND COLT FLATTOP SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN None. Experimental or prototype very unusual Single Action with 7-1/2″ bbl that has a rectangular target front sight base with adjustable blade. It has a modified, flat, top strap with fixed rear sight that has a serrated top. The top strap has beveled edges and a radius at the front end where it meets the bbl. Other than the caliber marking and bbl address it is completely unmarked. It is “in the white”, never having been finished. The frame, cylinder and grip frame have rough machine marks and, obviously, has not undergone final finish and polishing. It has not had the machine work done to install a loading gate and it does not have a firing pin bushing. The bbl, ejector rod & housing and grips are later additions. It is accompanied by several pages of letters between Mr. William B. Edwards (a well-known collector in the 1950’s & ‘60’s, who was the V.P. at Mars Equip. Corp. – a large surplus & gun distributor in Chicago) and Colt. There is also a notarized letter signed by Edwards. In the notarized letter, wherein he is selling this revolver to Mr. David Brown, he states that he obtained the frame, grip frame and cylinder in about 1957 from “Joe Bodrie” who he states was employed as an “exhibition shooter by the Colt Firearms Company”. He states that Mr. Bodrie told him that he obtained the parts from the factory in their “green” or unfinished state. He further states that he had the bbl, front sight and grips fitted at a later date, and that it had been in his possession continually until he sold it to Mr. Brown. This revolver is pictured on pate 67 of THE 36 CALIBERS OF THE COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY, Brown. CONDITION: Still completely in the white. Frame, grip frame and cylinder have an aged patina with a few tiny, scattered spots of surface discoloration. Bbl and ejector rod housing have a smoother finish and the cylinder pin end is damaged.. Grips are near new and do not fit very well. This is a most unusual and desirable Single Action that would add to anyone’s collection. 4-53914 JR546 (4,500-6,500).
