KAREL FRANS PHILIPPEAU (Netherlands, 1825-1897) TROUBADOUR SERENADING A GATHERING AT A ROMAN MANOR HOUSE. Outstanding large oil on wood panel scene shows a man with small guitar standing atop rock and singing in front of a gathered group of men, women and children. 13 people are seated and standing attentive to his performance. The background is a fancy white manor house having a curving wall at lakeside with mountain peaks in background under blue and white cloud sky. Outstanding detail in this colorful and pleasing subject matter. Signed lower right “Philippeau 1866”. Housed in an outstanding black and gilt wood frame having a brand “M. GRIEVE CO. HAND CARVED NEW YORK & LONDON”. SIZE: 23-1/2″ x 35-1/2″. CONDITION: The large wood panel has a wood slatted cradle back. Very good, minor inpainting. 9-98284 (8,000-12,000)
