EXCEPTIONAL M. F. KENNEDY ST. PAUL TOP LEVER HAMMER HEAVY GAME GUN WITH EXTRA SET OF BARRELS. SN 10912/ 10593. Cal. 10 Ga. 3″ Chambers/ 2-7/8″ Chambers. This is a very high quality and finely finished gun. Both sets of barrels are 32″ with broad high concave game ribs, and have “M.F. Kennedy & Bros.” and “St. Paul, Minn.” inlaid in gold English script, on ribs. Both sets are stamped on bottoms with SNs and “T. Kilby Steel Damascus”. Bbl no. 10912 has no proofs, but bottom of each bbl is engraved “Paul”. Bbl set no. 10593 has full complement of London provisional and definitive proofs on bbl flats, which are also stamped “12 M”, “10 B”, and “Not for Ball”. This set of bbls is built considerably lighter than the other set, and has a decorative band of gold inlaid Arabesque devices at breech, in front of bosses which make a transition from the heavier receiver to the lighter bbls. Nicely filed action is also stamped “T Kilby” on flats with view proofs. Top lever and third fastener are essentially the same as the typical Westley Richards pattern, however bolt engages a wide straight rib extension vs. a doll’s head, as is typical for Westley Richards. Rebounding bar locks have low set hammers that are very nicely filed, in a fashion similar to that of W. W. Greener. Action has vine border engraving with a few simple scrolls around lockplates, and bursts around some screws and pins, but is mostly plain, and unengraved. As counterpoint to this “M. F. Kennedy & Bros” is inlaid in gold on lockplates in same style as bbls. Trigger plate extends to grip cap. Trigger guard bow is attached in two places. Very nicely veined and stump figured European walnut full pistol grip buttstock measures 14-1/8″ over original checkered horn buttplate, and features 20 LPI borderless checkering but with mullered borders on points, horn grip cap, and silver shield on toe line. Matching splinter forend fastens with forward lever, the base of which is filed in an unusual decorative manner. There are three panels of point pattern checkering with mullered borders on forend, the center panel being much more finely checkered at 24 LPI. BBLS 10912: Bore diameter: left -.792, right -.802. Bore restrictions: left -.051, right -.063. Wall thickness: left -.042, right -.040. Drop at heel: 2-1/2″, drop at comb: 1-5/8″. Weight: 10 lbs. 7 oz, LOP 14-1/8″. BBLS 10593: Bore diameter: left -.803, right -.796. Bore restrictions: left -.058, right -.048. Wall thickness: left -.031, right -.034. Weight: 9 lbs. 9.3 oz. PROVENANCE: Copy of October 1996 THE GUN REPORT with article on Kennedy shotguns by Jeffrey Tordoff. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain approximately 50% original brown, which has darkened, and with a few areas of light pitting, which has been cleaned. Action, locks, and hammers retain perhaps 20 -30% original case color, but are mostly silver, with areas browning. Stocks retain most of what appears to be their original finish with numerous marks and dings. Forend shows considerable wear from carrying. Checkering is still clear and raised. Action is tight. Bbls are on face. Bores are very fine, with some very light frosting, but are mostly bright and shiny. Locks are crisp. Right hammer nose has been broken and repaired by brazing. A very shootable and collectible 10 Bore with “modern” dimensions. 4-40604 MGM59 (3,000-6,000)
