RARE TIESING PROTOTYPE LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF (44-40). NSN. This rare rifle has attributes & similarities to a number of rifles being produced at the time this one was being developed. It has a 24″ oct bbl with full magazine, half nickel front sight and early style semi-buckhorn rear sight with checkered edges similar to the early style Winchester Model 1873 sight, but longer. It has uncheckered wood with straight stock and crescent buttplate that contains a 4-pc brass & iron-wiping rod. The magazine band and forend cap are very similar to the style and location of the band found on the Morse rifle being sold elsewhere in this catalogue. The receiver resembles a Model 73 and Marlin Cross with removable sideplates and a raised upper frame, which accommodates the mortised dust cover, which is attached to the bolt. The dust cover is engraved “F.W. TIESING’S PATENT / MAY 22. 1877”. It has Winchester Model 73 style lever & hammer with Winchester style lever lock. One of the primary differences is in the loading gate, which is on the bottom of the receiver, rather than the side. It also has another feature of the Morse rifle or vice versa in that the carrier stays in the up position until forward pressure on the lever forces it downward to receive a fresh cartridge from the magazine. This exact rifle is pictured on pp. 164 & 165 of EVOLUTION OF THE WINCHESTER, McDowell. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl & magazine tube retain about 95% strong bright orig blue. Receiver is mostly a thin blue/gray patina with some strong blue in the sheltered areas. Sideplates retain about 95% orig blue and the lever about 90% thin orig blue with the hammer retaining bright case colors. Wood is sound with usual handling & storage marks and retains most of its orig bright varnish. Mechanics are fine with bright shiny bore. From the collection of the late Bruce McDowell. 4-54645 JR715 (5,000-10,000)
