WINCHESTER FIRST MODEL 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal 45-70. SN 3225. Fine, early, standard grade rifle with 26” oct bbl, full magazine, half-nickel front sight, and 1886 marked ladder rear sight. Uncheckered wood with straight stock and crescent steel buttplate. The receiver, lever, hammer, forend cap, and buttplate are cased colored. Accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter fully identifying this rifle and indicating shipment on February 22, 1887 to order number 15639. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl and magazine tube retain about 95% strong original blue with a few scattered spots of light rust and surface etching. Receiver retains about 90% brilliant case colors on the sides and top with the bottom carrying area thin and turning silver. Lever retains about 75% brilliant case colors and the hammer about 95%. Forend cap retains about 75-80% strong bright colors mixed with brown patina, and the buttplate about 95% strong case colors, slightly faded with freckles of rust. Wood is sound and retains most of its original varnish with light scratches and bruises and a couple of dings on the forearm. Mechanics are fine with bright shiny bore and a few spots of deeper rust.
