RARE EARLY L.C. SMITH 3 QUALITY WITH REBATED LOCK PLATES. SN 30068. Cal. 10ga, 30″ Damascus bbls with checkered, tapered concave rib, single brass sighting bead, FULL/FULL choke, 2-7/8″ chambers, extractors and dbl triggers. Top rib is marked from chamber “HUNTER ARMS CO. MAKERS FULTON. N.Y.” The short rib on bottom is stamped with a “3” and bottom of left bbl is stamped “XXX”. The early Hunter Arms receiver is engraved in a 3 quality pattern with very rare rebated lock plates that are engraved with oval with 2 woodcock in field scene on left and single grouse in field scene on right. There are some accenting foliate arabesque scrolls and fences are carved with a single rib. Mounted with nicely figured walnut, checkered pistol grip with sculpted and fluted hard rubber grip cap, checkered hard rubber buttplate with vignette of 2 setters on point, checkered splinter forend slightly schnabled with ebony tip insert. Hard rubber center escutcheon is missing. Bore diameter: left -.798, right -.798. Bore restrictions: left -.035, right -.033. Wall thickness: left -.035, right -.023. Drop at heel: 3-1/2″, drop at comb: 2-1/16″. Weight: 8lbs. 5oz. LOP 14-1/8″. Accompanied with Cody Firearms Museum fact sheet identifying as Grade 3, 10ga, 30″ bbls. Other remarks, XXX stock. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls have dark brown Damascus on left bbl while right bbl shows Damascus pattern with a gray patina. There are typical minor nicks, dings & scratches. Receiver has orig case colors on top tang with balance of receiver a silver hardening mixed with gray patina. Stock is sound with sharp checkering, normal nicks, dings & scratches and retaining much of its orig finish with some hand-worn patina in grip area. Forend is sound with sharp checkering, some minor nicks & dings and retains orig finish. Mechanics are good with non-automatic safety, nice shiny bore in right bbl while left bbl has numerous pits in chamber and bbl.
