Correction: This statue is alabaster not marble.

“NOCTURNE” CLASSICAL WHITE MARBLE STATUE OF A NYMPH. Last quarter 19th century. A carved white marble model with semi-nude maiden with long hair entwined with a crescent moon and stars, a five-pointed star on her brow, floating above a stylized cloud base with a rose near one foot. On a circular plinth. The statue is being sold together with a pedestal in the form of a classical fluted column molded with grapevines. Literature: The statue bears some strong similarities to “Verite”, a bronze by Jean-Louis Gregoire (French, 1840-1890) and also to a bronze titled “The Night” by Edouard Drouot (French, late 19th century). Both statues posed in a similar manner with elements of moon and star. See Bronzes, Sculptors & Founders 1800-1930, by Harold Berman, Vol. 2, p. 322, figures 1160 and 1162. SIZE: 43-1/2″ h. of statue. 24″ h. of column. CONDITION: Statue in overall very good condition, in need of a cleaning, only slightly weathered, the proper right forefinger broken and re-attached, small hairline cracks in the base within the ‘cloud’ areas, other small seam cracks may be part of marble graining. The pedestal is in as-found condition, the capital and base with repairable breaks. 9-93188 (5,000-8,000)
