ENGRAVED MODEL 1860 HENRY LEVER ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 44 RF Henry. SN 11740. Usual configuration with 24-1/4″ oct bbl with integral magazine, German silver front sight and 900 yard Henry ladder rear sight, missing its slide. It has very nicely figured American walnut stock with factory sling swivel in the butt and a staple on the left side of the bbl. The numbers are all matching with the serial number appearing on the left side of the lower tang under the wood, in the top tang channel in the buttstock and inside the toe of the buttstock. The serial number on the lower tang appears to have been stamped over but appears to be the correct size and shape and likely was an item recycled at the plant. The left side of the top tang under the wood is stamped with a large “E” and the left side of the lower tang has the number “29”. An educated guess is that the “E” signifies engraving and the “29” is an assembly number, although it was not observed anywhere else on the rifle. The screws are all correct Henry style screws. The receiver is engraved in the trademark Samuel J. Hoggson motif consisting of his distinctive running deer on the left side plate with panels of foliate arabesque engraving surrounding and matching engraving on the front side flats, the right sideplate is engraved with matching patterns and there are light motifs up over the top three flats, the back edge of the receiver and top tang. The buttplate tang is engraved to match. The tip of the lower tang has three curious small dots, which correspond with three small dots on the adjoining wood. CONDITION: Fine plus. Bbl and magazine tube retain a smooth mottled silver/brown patina, dark in the sheltered areas with scattered spots of light rust and discoloration. Receiver is outstanding, retaining 80-85% strong orig silver-plating with only edge wear and some losses on the bottom. Stock is sound and retains most of an old refinish with moderate nicks & scratches and a small gouge on the comb. Buttplate retains about 85% silver-plating. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with some shine and scattered light to moderate pitting. From the collection of the late Bruce McDowell. 4-54643 JR125 (25,000-40,000)
