STEVENS MODEL 51 SCHUTZEN RIFLE. Cal. 32-40. SN 1729. A beautiful high quality target rifle with 29-7/8″ #2 weight oct to rnd bbl, with windage adjustable globe front sight, no provision for a mid bbl sight and a fine thick base, windage adjustable, mid-range, vernier tang sight. There is an inscription on the bottom of the bbl, just forward of the forearm “DOWNEAST A & C AMHERST NH”. The receiver is very nicely engraved with about 50% coverage deep foliate arabesque patterns, fine borderlines and rosettes around the pins & screws. It has dbl set triggers and a small Schutzen style lever with walnut panels. It has very nicely grained American walnut wood with checkered schnable tipped forearm and Schutzen buttstock with sweeping cheek piece and medium tine steel Schutzen buttplate. The stock has an old repair through the wrist with an amateur attempt at re-checkering and there is a wide hand cut dovetail on the bottom flat of the bbl underneath the forearm where someone apparently has had a palm rest installed. Accompanied by an Ideal bullet mold for pointed bullets and another for flat nose bullets along with an Ideal loading tool, missing the expander plug and a 5/16″ patch cutter. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 90% dull orig blue with some minor spotting and a nick or two with some thinning over the chamber area. Receiver retains 25-30% muted case colors with a spot or two of bright color and the balance turned silver. Wood, as previously noted, also has a repaired crack in the tip of the forearm on both sides and retains most of an old restored finish with minor nicks & scratches. Crisp mechanics, brilliant shiny bore. From the Collection of Arthur Jackson. 4-54416 JR107 (3,000-6,000)
