GRANT WRIGHT (American, 1865-1935) FISHING ON THE HACKENSACK RIVER. Oil on canvas landscape scene shows a calm, wide river with rock and tree lined banks with hill beyond under early morning sky. A fisherman is at the back of the pool knee deep in water. Signed lower right and dated “1888”. Titled “Hackensack River” on reverse of canvas. Housed in what appears to be its original gilt gesso decorated frame with gilt liner. A nice identified New Jersey scene. Grant was one of the foremost landscape painters & commercial artists during the early part of the 20th Century. He was an illustrator for several New York magazines and his works include the first cover of “Popular Magazine”. Prior to his death he had been working with Lt. Edward Kirk of the Weehawken Police Department who was writing the history of Weehawken. Wright was helping in the gathering of data as well as the artist for all of the illustrations.
