FRANZ SCHILLING DELUXE GERMAN SCHUTZEN RIFLE. Cal 8.15 x 46R. NSN. Beautiful deluxe Schutzen rifle with 29-3/4” fluted oct bbl with windage front sight base (sight is missing) and midrange rear sight groove on top flat and a large vernier peep at rear of receiver. Top flat has “R. SCHILLING IN KOBURG” inlaid in gold surrounded by extremely fine silver wire inlay. Top three flats over the chamber have silver inlaid, extremely fine, arabesque patterns. Receiver has full coverage Germanic foliate and floral engraving, shaded background with an oval panel on left side of a German girl with long flowing braids carrying ten liters of beer dressed in Bavarian costume. The oval on the right side depicts a man shooting a rifle. Lower half of the oval has very fine detail oak leaves and acorn. Each end of both ovals has very fine gold wire inlay. Top of the receiver and falling block are likewise engraved and the top tang has what appears to be very fine, intertwined, gold initials “EW”. Typical Schutzen trigger guard, with dbl set triggers. Forearm is nicely checkered in the center in a shield pattern with both ends beautifully carved in foliate relief patterns with stippled background. Buttstock is typically early, heavy, semi-Schutzen style of marble cake French walnut with deep cheek piece, carved on the edge and around the entire bottom behind the lower tang with matching deep foliate patterns. The short horn Schutzen style buttplate is engraved to match the receiver. Breechblock hinge pin is shaped like a key. Bottom of bbl has two iron guides with the rear having a sling loop with corresponding loop on the stock. Wiping rod is missing. CONDITION: Good. Bbl retains an even dark blue/brown patina. Receiver is a medium gray patina. Lever retains case colors in sheltered areas. Wood is sound showing moderate wear with some oil staining around the tangs. Bore is strong and bright, in need of a good scrubbing. 4-48351 JR208 (3,000-4,000)
