*RARE SAVAGE MODEL 1907/1910 MILITARY TEST TRIAL SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. SN 107. Cal. 45 ACP. Very rare military test trial pistol, one of only 278 manufactured in the period 1907-1910 for military test trials which ultimately resulted in the awarding of a government contract for semi-auto pistols to Colt for the Model 1911. While these Savage pistols competed somewhat favorably with Colt, they were ultimately rejected as being too complicated and difficult to operate. In 1912 the entire remaining stock of 181 Savage pistols had been recalled from the field to Springfield Armory and were advertised for sale as surplus. They were sold to Kirtland Bros. & Co. of New York, NY which redirected them to the Savage Arms Co. Savage reconditioned these pistols by removing the Savage markings from the top of the slide, refinishing them in matte finish and offering them commercially. Page 261 of U.S. Military Automatic Pistols 1894-1920, Meadows, lists this pistol, along with 115 others that were in private collections as of the writing of that book. Page 260 of the referenced publication pictures the bbl marking as found on this pistol as being one marketed commercially by Savage. Pistol is described as having a matte blue finish with 5-1/4″ bbl, rnd slide with raised rib that has a pinned half moon front sight and raised ribbed grasping grooves at rear of slide. Hammer has a ribbed rnd spur with thumb safety on left side and grip safety in the backstrap. Bottom of back strap has an articulated lanyard loop that when not needed folds inside grip. Mounted with full checkered walnut grip panels and accompanied by one matching numbered magazine. Serial numbers were observed on all major components including frame, slide, breech block, hammer shroud, hold-open and magazine. Top rear of rib on slide is marked “CAL 45.” and left side of slide, by the rib, is marked “SAVAGE ARMS CORP. UTICA, N.Y. U.S.A.” Trigger has straw colored sides. This is one of the great rarities in American automatic pistol collecting. CONDITION: Very fine, all matching as noted above. Overall retains most of its orig satin finish with muzzle end and sharp edge wear with an area of pitting on right front end of slide and right tip edge of frame. Grips are sound with a few chipped diamonds and light diamond point wear. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-39276 JR255 (7,500-12,500)
