WEBLY MODEL 1897 SINGLE SHOT HUNTING RIFLE. Cal 400/360 . SN 13453. This beautiful rifle was retailed by “Joseph Lang & Son 102 New Bond St, London. W” and is 1 of only 5 known. Jonathan Kirton in his second edition of THE BRITISH FALLING BLOCK BREECHLOADING RIFLE on page 265, states that “ rifles with this action are exceedingly rare; after years of searching the writer has only been able to confirm the existence of three surviving examples”. Of these examples, only one other is known to have its original barrel in its original chambering. This is the only known example with scalloped action, the others have squareback actions. It appears that less than ten of this action were ever produced and with the few known, makes it truly one of the most rare single shot rifles. It has a 26-3/4” tapered rnd bbl with long, ramp, caterpillar front sight and 3-leaf platinum line express sight (one standing and two folding) graduated to 300 meters. The top of the bbl, above the rear sight, is marked with the retailer’s name and address. The left side of the chamber area is marked “.360/40 GRS CORDITE 300 GRS BULLET MAXM”. It has a thin light receiver with under lever and tang safety with “Safe” in gold. The receiver, top tang, and lever are nicely engraved in fine arabesque patterns with about 40% coverage. It is mounted in nicely figured, checkered, 2-pc wood with thin forearm with horn tip and pistol grip stock 14-1/4” over an old crystallized solid red pad. It has sling eyes on the bbl and stock and has an oval initial plate that is engraved with a crown over a “T”. CONDITION: Extremely fine, retaining virtually all of a wonderful professionally restored finish to both metal and wood. Case colors on the receiver and lever are brilliant. Bright shiny bore with fine frosting in the grooves. 4-50251 JR207 (6,000-8,000)
