WESTLEY RICHARDS TRANSITIONAL SINGLE SHOT RIFLE. Cal 500/450 Westley Richards #2. SN 793. Rare and unusual falling block sporting rifle with 29-3/16” rnd bbl with pedestal, caterpillar front sight and four leaf express rear sight (one standing & three folding) graduated to 250 meters. The top of the bbl, just in front of the receiver, has a 2” Rigby style raised flat. The receiver is the patented Westley Richards type with square back edges and heavy trigger guard/floorplate configured for right hand use with a rotating safety. It has very nice straight grained, checkered, English walnut stock and forearm with horn forend tip and rounded semi pistol grip stock, 14-3/8” over a smooth steel buttplate. The bbl has a sling eye on the bottom with a corresponding sling eye in the butt. The left side of the bbl has tiny British proofs and is marked “For Westley Richards Metford Cartridge” and the top of the bbl is marked “Metford Rifling”. The top of the Rigby flat and top of the receiver have small triangles in which is engraved “1878” on the receiver. The receiver, top tang, trigger guard and buttplate tang are all beautifully engraved with very fine foliate arabesque patterns. The left side of the receiver is engraved on a ribbon “Westley Richards & Co/Limited London” and on the right side “Deeley Edge/Patent”. CONDITION: Extremely fine.
