RARE WINCHESTER 2ND MODEL NAVY HOTCHKISS MUSKET. Cal. 45-70. SN 19164. Rare Navy rifle, one of only 999 made, with 32″ rnd bbl, square base front sight/bayonet lug with 500 yard ski jump musket rear sight. The receiver has usual Winchester markings with “DFC” sub-inspector marks on the chamber area of the bbl and bolt handle. The bbl also has the Navy anchor on the left side and there is a small screw on top of the bbl by the receiver. It is mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with two bands, sling loop on the upper band and on the 1-pc trigger guard. It has a button head, wiping rod in the bottom of the forearm and a smooth musket buttplate. No evidence of cartouche visible on the wood. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl retains about 85% strong orig blue with a cleaned spot and rust pitting about a foot in front of the receiver with scattered light spots of rust elsewhere. Receiver retains most of its orig bright blue with scattered spots of rust. Stock has a crack on the left side by the receiver screw and two others on the right side, otherwise is sound and retains a fine dark oil patina. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with some orange peel pitting. From the collection of the late Bruce McDowell. 4-54605 JR169 (1,000-2,000)
