FRANCIS AUGUSTUS SILVA (American, 1835-1886) “BRACE’S ROCK – CAPE ANN, MASS”. Fine gouache/watercolor Gloucester coastal scene shows a large rock at low tide having a connection of rocks to shoreline. The foreground with small white tipped waves breaking onto coastal ledge forming tidal pool. On the horizon are twenty-four large & small sailing vessels. Fifteen seagulls fly close to water and over island. Signed lower left “F.A. Silva 76″. Housed in a gilt molded wood replacement frame with glass front. NOTE: Accompanying the painting are three original labels, one with title and artist (Probably artist written); a label from the Art Dept. International Exhibition from New York State Centennial Board; and a partial label from the same exhibit with artist, title, and price. Also indicating owner. SIZE: Sight: 16-1/2″ x 28-1/2”. PROVENANCE: Descending through the Wolff family of Weston, Massachusetts, originating with Otto August Wolff. CONDITION: Very good with lightness to 1-1/2″ on the top and along the sides from previous matting. Not examined out of frame. 9-23740 (35,000-45,000)
