THOMAS BUTTERSWORTH (British, 1768-1842) TO THE RESCUE. Oil on canvas shipwreck scene shows a three-mast galleon wrecking on jagged rocks in a rough ocean. A lifeboat with fourteen men is seen going toward shore. Twenty-nine men on deck, some on top sail, others at edge of railing. Parts of the ship are seen in water and lightning cascades from angry gray sky. Signed bottom middle left “T Buttersworth”. Housed in a fine gilt gesso decorated replacement frame. PROVENANCE: Rankin Estate, Annapolis, Maryland. Purchased from Marine Arts Gallery, Salem, Massachusetts, 1990. SIZE: 21-1/2” x 31-1/2”.
