*ENGRAVED 1940 KRIEGHOFF LUGER SEMI-AUTO PISTOL. SN 8698. Cal. 9 mm. Dark blue/black finish with 4″ tapered rnd bbl, barleycorn front sight and fixed rear sight as part of toggle. Mounted with Krieghoff checkered black composition grips. Accompanied by a blue body fxo, black synthetic base magazine. Pistol is engraved in Germanic style foliate arabesque patterns with about 70% coverage well executed engraving. It has “1940” chamber date and the standard late Krieghoff toggle link markings. Engraving is similar in style to that observed on other factory engraved Krieghoff Lugers. This pistol was German military issue and as such it would be unusual for it to be engraved which leads one to speculate that it was a either a special presentation to a high ranking Nazi official or perhaps as a reward for valor to a military person. There is also a possibility that it could have been engraved immediately post-war at the direction of an American service member who may have captured it. CONDITION: Extremely fine, all visible numbers matching. Overall retains about all of its fine dark blue/black finish with only faint sharp edge wear. Grips are crisp as is the magazine. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-40579 JR68 (3,500-5,000)
