*SCARCE CZ CIVILIAN/SS GERMAN WWII SNIPER RIFLE. SN 250. Cal. 8mm Mauser. Beautiful commercial CZ rifle with 24″ tapered rnd bbl, typical CZ ramp front sight with silver bead and 2-leaf pedestal mounted express sight, 1-standing, 1-folding. Mounted in a typical early CZ sporting half stock of nicely figured walnut with schnable tip & checkered forestock with checkered capped pistol grip and serrated steel buttplate with single set trigger. The receiver ring bears the early CZ cartouche of the intertwined “C” & “Z” in a circle. Any other markings were obliterated with the installation of claw mounts dovetailed into receiver ring and mounted on rear bridge. No other markings are exposed. Bottom of bbl and bottom flat of receiver, by bbl lug, are stamped with serial number and “SS” runes. Inside the stock, on the adjacent flat, is stamped with the serial number and a Waffenampt that appears to be eagle “17”. The bbl channel has the pencil matching serial number. Buttplate is unnumbered. Additional externally visible matching numbers appear on the cut-off, bolt handle, bolt shroud, striker & safety. Striker also has an indecipherable Waffenampt and “e”. Trigger guard & floorplate are matching numbered with SS runes on floorplate along with a Waffenampt eagle “280”, while trigger guard has a Waffenampt eagle “37”. The trigger bears the number “71” and extractor “28”. The claw mounted scope, that appears to be probably by Hensoldt, with single post reticle is matching numbered with SS runes. There are numerous references to the German army having appropriated civilian sporting rifles and converting them to use as sniper rifles and this rifle certainly fits that profile CONDITION: Very fine to extremely fine. Overall retains about 97-98% strong commercial blue showing very little use & wear on bbl & receiver. Trigger guard & floorplate are a thin plum blue patina. Scope retains 93-95% strong orig blue with some minor flaking on rear eye piece and left side of turret. Optics are clean & clear. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-40069 JR91 (5,000-10,000)
