*RARE SPRINGFIELD HOFFER THOMPSON GALLERY TRAINING RIFLE. SN 97721. Cal. 22. Built on an early 1903 action with 24″ bbl marked “SA / 8-20” with a flaming bomb in the middle. Mounted in a full length 1903 stock with grasping grooves and high hump long handguard. It has an early split front band/bayonet lug with stacking swivel and grooved middle band with sling loop and corresponding sling loop in buttstock, that contains a crisp new “1918” dated composite military sling with steel hooks. Stock has a visible “JSA” cartouche on left side. Buttplate is smooth steel with trap. Rifle has standard 03 sights with sheet metal front sight hood and 2850 gd. rear sight. Receiver & bolt are greenish gray Parkerized finish, probably refinished at the time of rebuild to Hoffer Thompson configuration. Trigger guard & floorplate are polished blue. PROVENANCE: Carl Metz Collection. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl, receiver, bolt & follower retain virtually all of their armory restored finish. Bands, floorplate & trigger guard retain most of their orig armory blue. Wood is sound with nicks, dings & scratches and retains about all of an armory restored oil finish. Sling is crisp. Mechanics are fine, brilliant shiny bore. 4-38453 (1,200-2,000)
